DISC BRAKES
What are Disk Brakes?
A disc brake is when the vehicle uses brake pads and rotor to slow the vehicle down. This is done by the brake caliper containing brake fluid, which is an important factor when braking. The brake fluid created pressure on the brake pads, squeezing both brake pads at the same time against the rotor/ disc. As the brake pad squeezes against the disc, it allows the axle to slow down it's rotational speed.
Signs of issues:
If you hear a grinding noise when braking or have to push down hard on the brake pedal to slow down or stop, you may need new brake pads and/or rotors. Most brake pads are equipped with a brake noise indicator which allows the driver to know when the brake pads need to be services.
DRUM BRAKES
What are Drum Brakes?
A drum brake is the vehicle uses friction from the brake shoes or pads. The friction is pushed outwards, pressing against the inner part of the brake drum.
Signs of issues:
The signs of needing yor brake drums replaced is no different than needing new brake pads [listed above]. The same kind of noises and/or feeling apply. You may feel slight vibrations while braking, emergency handle may feel loose, scraping noises or inconsistence brake pedal feeling.
